“Cherished Flight” Tutorial

Here’s my second Color Throwdown card. I just LOVE these colors together, especially when you add a bit of green!

Color Throwdown #93

Cherished Flight

Materials:

Stamp Sets: Illuminations, Elements of Style
Inks: Baja Breeze, Pink Pirouette, Melon Mambo, Kiwi Kiss, Old Olive, Always Artichoke, Blue Bayou, Soft Suede, VersaMarker and VersaMark
Cardstock: Whisper White, Pink Pirouette, Soft Suede, textured Old Olive
Accessories: Clear embossing powder, heat gun, Powder Pals, Stamp-a-majig, brayer, Stampin’ Write markers, sponges, scallop trim corner punch, 1 3/4” circle punch.

  • The idea started once again in my sketch book. I was deliberately trying to make a couple cards that broke out of my landscape mode in which I used the stamp images as part of a scene. In these cards, I wanted the stamp images to be the focus of the card.
    The Idea
  • I loaded the Cherish image from the Illuminations set (retired, sorry :-) ) first with VersaMark and then with Melon Mambo ink. I used my Stamp-a-majig to ensure my placement and stamped it on a 3 1/2” square piece of Whisper White cardstock. I embossed with Clear Embossing powder.
    Step 1a
  • I wanted the “C” to resist the subsequent brayering and so using a blender pen, I colored in the outline and some of the filigree with Pink Pirouette ink. Step 1b
I went over the Pink areas with the VersaMarker and embossed with Clear Embossing powder.
    Step 1c
  • Next I brayered with Kiwi Kiss, moving toward the main image from each of  the four corners. Without reinking the brayer I then passed over the center so that it would be only very lightly colored, but would not have such a high contrast with the brayered corners. Step 2
  • Using my Stamp-a-majig, I stamped the swirl image from the Elements of Style set in the corners with Old Olive ink. Step 3
  • Using Old Olive again, I sponged over the swirl images, not covering the Kiwi Kiss ink entirely. Step 4a
  • I sponged in the corners again with Always Artichoke, not covering the Old Olive entirely.  Step 4b
  • I then cut a 3 3/4” square piece of Pink Pirouette cardstock and punched the corners using the Scallop Trim Corner punch. (I had to put it on the blue cardstock because my camera would not focus on it otherwise.)
    Step 5a
  • I sponged around the Pink Pirouette square with Melon Mambo ink. Step 5b
  • I cut four 1 3/4” circles from Whisper White cardstock and stamped the hummingbird on each by loading the stamp with Baja Breeze and then swiping Blue Bayou across the tail and head.  (Though I didn’t take a picture of this step, you can see how I mounted the main panel on the PP square in the pictures below.)Step 6a
  • I lightly sponged each circle with Baja Breeze. Step 6b
  • I sponged the edges of each circle with Blue Bayou.STep 6c
  • I sponged a little Soft Suede on each circle, just at the edge, and adhered the hummers at the corners of my main panel. Step 7
  • I cut a 5 3/4” square of Soft Suede cardstock and using my Stamp-a-majig for placement, I stamped the swirl image around the edges of the square, stamping off once for all but the center-side images.Step 8a
  • I sponged around the edge of the square with Soft Suede and adhered the main panel, mat, and hummers onto it, then adhered it all to a 6 x 12” piece of textured Old Olive card stock folded in half. Step 8b
  • Here’s the finished card, measuring 6”square:
    Cherished Flight

  • Thanks for looking once again and Happy Stamping!
